The Case for Ellsbury

By Jay Drew

With mounting speculation that the Red Sox are still trying to land Adrain Gonzalez this Sox fan wants to ask....Are you sure? Acquiring Gonzalez would almost certainly be the end of Jacoby Ellsbury. The question I ask is why would you get rid of a game changer like Ellsbury for a beefed up bat? Ellsbury hit .301 with 70 stolen bases in 2009. He stretches singles into doubles, doubles into triples and even stole home. He is always a threat even with 2 outs and nobody on base. His defense speaks for itself, how many times does he make web gem style catches while we hold our breath. Don't get me wrong Gonzalez has a great glove (another gold glove this year) and the ability to hit the long ball. He hit just .277 last year with 109 strike outs and walked 119 times. Do we need another first baseman? I would rather see Lowell stay at third, Youkilis at First and Kotchman on the bench. I'm not sold on the Red Sox using Lowell on the Bench and putting Casey Kotchman on First and moving Youkilis back to Third. Does that really give us the best team on the field and at bat? Lowell the 2007 World Series MVP had 75 RBI last year with being out a few times. Why would want to replace Lowell's bat with Kotchman's? It's another wait and see for Red Sox Nation. I will chime in with two more words... Jason Bay!

  1. Ellsbury adds lots of excitement chasing down balls in the outfield and on the base paths. l would hate to see him go.
