Victor Martinez and Casey Kotchman

3:50PM 7/31/09

The Red Sox have successfully acquired Victor Martinez in exchange for RHP Justin Masterson, LHP Nick Hagadone and RHP Bryan Price. Adding a formidable switch-handed bat and a relatively flexible position player, capable of being placed at first, catcher or DH.

They have also completed a swap with the Atlanta Braves, giving them Adam LaRoche for Casey Kotchman. This deal has been regarded as a very neutral and inconsequential deal. Both left-handed batters and both play first base. It remains to be seen if Kotchman will just be used as a bargaining chip in deals within the hour.

J.P. Ricciardi has stated "I don't see us doing anything."

The Roy Halladay trade possibilities seem very bleak. The price as far as money and players remains extremely steep as Toronto feels they have the best pitcher in the American League, and many people would agree with that sentiment. If a deal is completed between the Blue Jays and the Red Sox, it would likely include Clay Buchholtz and perhaps include Daniel Bard who are two futures that the Red Sox administration feel strongly about.
