The Defense is looking Better.

Chris Allen

After a rough start defensively for the Sox, the team has now gone eight games without an error. June 3 against Detroit was the last time there was a miscue and you might remember the Sox made all three of the errors in one inning. Mike Lowell, Dustin Pedroia and Nick Green all committed errors in the 8th inning of the game leading to five Detroit runs. The Sox have now moved up to 9th in the American League in Fielding percentage with 36 errors in 2217 chances. Some of this is attributed with the benching of Julio Lugo. Lugo pinch hit last night, getting a hit and scoring a run, but it was his first appearance since June 5th against Texas. While Nick Green is no Ozzie Smith, he continues to make most of the plays, including a spectacular one against Derek Jeter in the 9th inning of Thursdays game. He can also turn the double play better than Lugo who either freezes on the bag or drops the ball most of the time. When Jed Lowrie gets back it will be interesting to see how much time he gets at short over Green. Is Lowrie really the answer at short? He has yet to commit an error at Shortstop in his abbreviated Major League career. I would anticipate Lugo getting his outright release to make room for Lowrie on the roster. Green and Lowrie will share the Shortstop position with Lowrie getting some time at Third and Second.
