A Digression from the Red Sox

By Thomas Casey
4/13/09

Today, Harry Kalas was pronounced dead at 1:20 P.M. after collapsing in the press box at National’s Park. Kalas was at the age of 73 when he passed. We find ourselves deprived of one of the greatest voices in sports history.

Kalas and his low baritone voice found a place in Philadelphia, as he broadcast there since 1971. Kalas was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame for his broadcasting prowess in 2002. Most recently, Kalas made the call as Brad Lidge made the clinching save in the 2008 World Series. Many will also recognize his unmistakable voice being used in NFL Films since 1975.

It seems like there has been a great deal of heart ache hitting Baseball in the past week, with the passing of the Angels Nick Adernhart, Mark Fidrych (A former Boston Red Sox pitcher) and Harry Kalas. But if there is one thing Baseball has taught us after the events of 9/11, it is that the game must carry on.

The emotion displayed towards the loss of Kalas is only matched by the fond memories he leaves us with. Harry Kalas will live on through the thoughts and memories of everyone who was blessed enough to listen to him.
