Shortstop Battle?

One of the questions on our Red Sox team heading into next year is the shortstop position. I realize that our "starting" shortstop has been Lugo, and that Lowrie was filling in due to injury. Does anybody not think that Jed would have been filling in anyways, due to defensive and offensive ineffectiveness? Is there anybody out there who has been impressed by Julio Lugo's play since he has had a Sox uniform on? I will speak for myself. I have never been impressed with Julio Lugo, or his contract, since he put on a Sox uniform. This is not to say that I have been overly impressed by Jed Lowrie either. Jed Lowrie was pulled up from the minors to fill in, and did an acceptable job. He was an improvement at the plate, and certainly a big improvement on defense. If you have seen Lugo at short you know that his defense was very poor, with tons of unforced errors. Jed did much better, and will only get better. Lowrie may not be the everyday answer at this point, but he will get there. We have given Lugo enough time to try and earn his contract. He either cannot play here, see Renteria, or just is not the player anymore that the Red Sox thought they signed. Either way I would say "see ya" to Julio Lugo, and give Jed Lowrie the job. The last Red Sox game I went to last year was the ALCS clinching game at Fenway park in which, guess who, had the game winning walk-off hit. It was not Mr. Lugo, and it was the only walk-off win I have ever seen in person, and it was amazing. I don't have any similar, or even positive, memories of Julio Lugo. Did we win a World Series with a sub-par shortstop? Yes. Could we do it again? Probably. Personally I would rather take the chance at something better. It can't hurt. Here's to Jed Lowrie at shortstop in 2009!! Good luck, kid!!
